Howard Formby is the founder and principal of Howard Formby Garden Design, with more than 30 years of experience across all aspects of garden design. His work is distinguished by a specialized focus on regenerative landscapes, horticulture, and conservation.

As a Senior Design Associate with Nancy Goslee Power & Associates in Santa Monica, he led the development and refinement of plantings for notable projects, including Kidspace Children’s Museum in Pasadena and Inner-City Arts in downtown Los Angeles, now designated as a wildlife sanctuary. He also designed the Weaver’s Garden at the Los Angeles County Arboretum, featuring California native plants traditionally used for weaving and natural dyes by Indigenous tribes.

Howard has studied garden design at UCLA, San Francisco State University, and through the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden’s Botany and Horticulture Program. He previously served as Chair of the Tree Advisory Committee for the City of Petaluma, was a board member of Daily Acts, and currently serves on the board of the Northern California chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. He is certified in Permaculture Design and is a Certified Sustainable Landscape Designer with the City of Santa Monica.

Shu is a landscape designer and a graduate of the University of California, Davis, where he earned his degree in Landscape Architecture. His professional experience includes both public and private landscape work. He has contributed to public projects such as trail design and wetland restoration, as well as private residential landscapes, allowing him to approach design with an understanding of ecological systems, user experience, and site-specific solutions across multiple scales.

In the studio, Shu supports the design and coordination of projects through the development of master plan documents, site planning, and construction details. He brings a thoughtful, detail-oriented approach to project execution and values clear graphic communication throughout the design process.

Outside of work, he enjoys camping, hiking, and photography, which continually inspire his appreciation for natural landscapes and inform his design perspective.

Annabelle brings a seamless blend of organization and creativity to her role as Office Manager and Design Assistant. Originally from West Sonoma County, she developed an early appreciation for art and nature. She later moved to Los Angeles to pursue her passion for design and architecture, collaborating with a range of interior designers and property investors.

With over a decade of hands-on experience, Annabelle has managed contractors, secured permits, and coordinated material sourcing. She is also a licensed real estate agent with strong expertise in contracts and negotiation. Her diverse background and keen eye for detail enable her to contribute a thoughtful, well-rounded perspective to every project she supports.
