The ground floor was faced in lava rock to evoke ancient Hawaiian fortifications, while a series of orchestrated experiences unfold throughout—a zigzag bridge modeled after samurai crossings, yellow koi swimming beneath blue water lilies, a meditation garden where a Buddha gazes across to the library terrace, plaster walls rubbed with native soil to create the patina of centuries.
